“Religious/spiritual beliefs and practices are commonly used by both medical and psychiatric patients to cope with illness and other stressful life changes. A large volume of research shows that people who are more R/S have better mental health and adapt more quickly to health problems compared to those who are less R/S…
“In this paper I have reviewed and summarized hundreds of quantitative original data-based research reports examining relationships between religious/spirituality and health. These reports have been published in peer-reviewed journals in medicine, nursing, social work, rehabilitation, social sciences, counseling, psychology, psychiatry, public health, demography, economics, and religion. The majority of studies report significant relationships between R/S and better health.”

I am from the medical field and have worked in the mental health sector, it’s true that religious/spiritual beliefs are used in our interventions when treating patients, although it would definitely have to depend on the beliefs such patient believes but I’ve personally seen it help the recovery of patients. It’s awesome that you were able to refer to published journals to make a stronger argument. It’s actually very interesting to know that these studies have been done, I actually am hoping that more studies be done on the matter especially in the medical field. We usually base most of our treatment approaches on established research, so it would definitely be great if more studies be made. Thank you for discussing this Father Steve and Pat!

Can’t believe Father Steve does so many activities and also serves as a priest. I think God gives people as much energy as they need when they’re serving Him. It was good to read a study that scientifically analyzed the effect of faith and religion on illnesses. To outsiders, it may seem as if Christians don’t experience pain and sorrow through disease and loss, but we know that’s untrue. The difference is that Christians have the faith and knowledge that God is working in their lives and that although they are going through a terrible time, the ultimate end is God’s glory and to make His children even stronger. What do you think, Pat?
