This is a saying I’ve heard many times, unfortunately I can’t attribute it. We know when it comes to our clients (or employees) we have to keep them motivated in order to “do the work” and reach their goals. We may pontificate to them about discipline, but really we’re trying to motivate them with a carrot/stick approach.
Their motivation distills to three things: a sufficient amount of structure, a sense of purpose and just the right amount of autonomy. Additionally in order for this motivation to be sustainable we need to deliver them results (or rewards in the case of employees).
But what about us? As the entrepreneur at the top of the tower who or what will motivate us to maintain the discipline to keep our business moving forward and growing?
We are already extremely self – driven, that’s how we got this far, but I’m talking about sustainability.
First, you really need to know your sense of purpose, your “why”. Let that sense of purpose determine how you structure your business and set up milestones for your business AND yourself.
The next part is as important, but often neglected by the entrepreneur. How will you reward yourself when you reach those milestones?
These rewards can be anything from the material to the abstract but they must be meaningful to you.
And, that introspection will only serve to make you a better leader and entrepreneur.
