How to Lose Weight Without Counting Calories, My Religious Experience, and More!
So mostly I’m pretty hush-hush about religion and politics because you know how it is but I decided to talk about my experience of how after many years of atheism I wound up becoming a Christian but don’t worry if you’re not interested in that because I talk about a lot of other things in this episode as well like how to lose weight without counting calories and how to rebound after failing to hit a goal, which is something I’m sure we can all relate to.
All these questions came from you by the way (like the proverbial you) from the survey I sent a few weeks back, so thanks for that!
Topics discussed:
- How to lose weight without counting calories (specifically the difference between using meal replacement shakes and “whole foods.”)
- How I went from atheism to Christianity.
- How to get back on track after failing to hit a goal.
- How to get started coaching people online.

Hey Pat – loved the podcast! I had a question on your meditation practice: How has it changed since becoming a Christian? Do you do anything different or set your focus on something (a verse, a word?). I’ve always wanted to meditate, but I’m never exactly sure how to do it, as a Christian.
Thanks for taking the time! 🙂

Mary – A very good question.
In some ways, it’s stayed the same. I think a basic mindfulness meditation is not only acceptable, but perfectly complementary to Christianity. In fact, I find it centers me for prayer and makes the prayer more powerful in what I feel I get out of it, that being a feeling of connection through a state of stillness. But on top of that, I also find that praying can get me ready for meditation, saying a few Our Fathers, etc. So it works both ways, and sometimes if I’m feeling stuck coming in on one approach, I’ll find success with the other. I’d suggest getting started with mindfulness but maybe beginning with a few prayers you’re familiar with and enjoy reciting just to center yourself. You can also use prayer as an anchor point, or that place you return whenever you catch your mind wandering if you have a hard time anchoring to the breath. Almost like a mantra, in some ways. Those are just a few of the things I’ve found helpful. Hope you get benefit from them, as well.

And you got started on Headspace, right? (I don’t know what “anchoring to the breath” means…) Thanks for the reply! 🙂
