Are Food Sensitivities Real?
Today I talk with Jen Fugo, clinical nutritionist, to make sense of so-called food sensitivities.
If you’ve ever thought your diet might somehow be linked to a greater, over-arching health problem, this episode is for you. We discuss everything from candida to “leaky gut”, and how what you eat (not just how much you eat) may very well play a major role in how you look and feel.

Gluten is not good for anyone, Jennifer! No human can digest it! Humans do not make the enzyme to digest it properly. All we digest is the 84 grams of carbs per cup of wheat! Yeow! No wonder we get fat. A study in 2015 found that EVERY person in the study, after eating gluten, had intestinal damage. EVERYONE!

Hi Wendy, thanks for taking the time to comment. I think its really challenging to claim no one should eat gluten when there are plenty of people who live in Blue Zones, for example, to very old age who eat gluten. There are traditional uses for gluten containing grains in other cultures (for example, the Japanese have a tea made from barley).
Now, the study I believe you’re referencing that included Dr. Alessio Fasano as part of the team didn’t show that all people had intestinal damage. They all exhibited an increase in gut permeability. Gut permeability is not the same thing as gut damage. Damage is what occurs if someone develops an ulceration or blunting of the villi which frequently occurs in those with active celiac. In no way does this study process that no one should eat gluten. Here is the link: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4377866/
If you have a reference you’d want to share here which details a different study that you’re talking about, then please share it.
All in all, I do want to be clear… I’m not advocating for people to eat gluten as that wasn’t the point of this podcast. I certainly love having a hardy discussion about diet and such, but if we’re going to talk about claims that are commonly made online, let’s make sure to back it up with research that supports it. So I await the study you’re referring to if it’s not the one I’ve shared here.

Wow, great that you were able to get an expert to really discuss about this. Food sensitivities are definitely real and we ought to be more careful or at least be more aware of the food that easily gets us itchy or running to the bathroom. Jen, great points you raised up! And Pat, oh nooo get more Chipotle! ha ha ha, I kid. Enjoyed listening to the podcast, I learned some new things too. 🙂
