Jennifer, No one is “okay” after eating gluten. The science is firm. Gluten causes damage to the intestines in EVERYONE! In Europe or the USA. No exceptions. It does not matter if you have symptoms or not. If you ate gluten, it caused damage. That’s the fact, ma’am. It can lead to over 80 autoimmune conditions. Read thedr.com for more information.
Jennifer Fugo says
Hi Wendy, I’m not sure what proof there is on Tom O’Bryan’s site that actual good science would suggest that. Certainly gluten damages intestines in those with Celiac Disease, but you cannot ever make the case that that is the same as what happens to others who do not have CD. It’s an inappropriate leap to say that since CD is a very specific AID and not everyone actually has it who cannot consume gluten.
Increase in gut permeability is not the same as damage. If that were the case, then according to that reasoning, every time you exercise intensely you’d be damaging your intestines since it has the same outcome.
That all said, consuming gluten doesn’t directly lead to AID. It is a trigger, but one its own may not be responsible for AID development. I understand very well what many talking heads have claimed about gluten. And I for one do not consume it because I’m very sensitive to it, but making claims like that without backing them up with research or overstretching the research to fit one’s view of the world isn’t fair to those who are looking for legit information. You can read more about the overuse of studies on those with Celiac Disease that are then inappropriately applied to those with gluten sensitivity and other AIDs on Dr. Ruscio’s website.
